Press Release

A group of light-enthused members of the Boston Sculptors Gallery are showing their glowing work this Fall at the Manship Artists Residency + Studios (MARS) in Gloucester, MA. Sixteen artists have designed site-specific sculptures for the grounds that use light in some way. Their floating, hanging, glowing, emitting work is on display and open to the public from September 25 through November 7.

The celebrated sculptor of the Prometheus Fountain at Rockefeller Center, Paul Manship established a summer residence and studio for himself and his family amid Cape Ann’s granite quarries. He was fascinated by the dark night sky and loved the fireflies that lit up the meadow next to his home. Manship named his property “Starfield” in their honor, delighting in his ability to walk through a field of stars when the fireflies were flashing for their mates and twinkling like celestial beings nearby.

As part of an ongoing effort to draw attention to the beauty and wonder produced by fireflies, the non-profit MARS invited members of Boston Sculptors Gallery to create a “festival of light” for the community.

The work is on exhibit from Saturday, September 25 to Sunday, November 7. While admission is free, guests will be required to reserve their spot online in advance as a CoViD precaution. We hope you will join us for an artist reception on Saturday, October 2, from 5-8 p.m. Rain date Sunday, October 3. Sign up early to secure your spot as space will be limited for all events.
