Since Chris just closed his solo show “Lie of the Land” the inspirations for the show are still on his mind…
“My grandfather always had model trains, and my grandmother collected dolls and dollhouses, so growing up I always found my way to the attic and got lost in miniature worlds when I visited. Later, I kept that interest going doing some professional work as a model builder for architects.
I’m not sure when I decided to pair this with politics—I’ve never made political work before—but I wanted to explore how we created, and then fell short of, an American mythology, through small-scale vignettes that promise an intimate experience but leave viewers asking, ‘how did we end up here and now, in this national condition?’.
The works in the show are purposefully ambiguous; they leave unanswered questions about whether the pieces represent the ambitions of some anonymous individual or a commentary about the state of our country’s civic life.”
